Coming down from the Microsoft Ignite Cloud-9

by Intlock Team on

Last week, the Intlock team touched down in Chicago for 4 tech-filled days of SharePoint at Microsoft Ignite. A community of 20,000 I.T Pros, Business Decision Makers, Microsoft Experts and MVPs, and vendors joined together to create a one-of-a-kind, Microsoft focused event.

Of the many exciting announcements that were made at Microsoft Ignite, one of the most important was the roadmap for SharePoint 2016. Based upon The Evolution of SharePoint: Overview and Roadmap, a lecture given at Ignite by SharePoint Senior Product Manager Bill Baer and Seth Patton, the Senior Director of SharePoint and OneDrive.

Here are a few takeaways:

  • SharePoint 2016 will primarily focus on easing technology delivery rather than new features.
  • Hybrid flexibility will be more accommodating
  • Delve will work even for SharePoint 2013
  • A cleaner, more clear interface for content authoring
  • Enhancements to the video portal, such as embedding.
  • A new knowledge portal named “Infopedia”

He also added a couple of statistics to get an idea of how enterprises and organizations are using SharePoint versions:

  • 80% of Fortune 500 companies use SharePoint on premises.
  • 35% SharePoint seats are on Office 365 (but probably many of these are small to medium businesses).

For those who are still using SharePoint On-Premises, this means that SharePoint 2016 most secure, scale-able, and reliable update.
